8kVA Generators
Every 8kVA generator we sell, the size most homes need for a long blackout with the air conditioner on.
8kVA Generators
8kVA is the size most homes land on for a long blackout. It runs the fridge, freezer, lights, TV and fans, and usually a split system air conditioner too.
What will an 8kVA generator run?
- Most of the house, including a split system air conditioner.
- A 2.2 kW pump started direct on line, with no soft starter.
- Welders, compressors or several tools at once for occasional jobs.
An 8kVA generator supplies about 32 amps on single phase at full output. If it will run for long hours, plan on about a quarter less, or look at a diesel.
Petrol, diesel or inverter?
Petrol open frames give the most power for the money and suit occasional and emergency use. Diesel uses less fuel on long runs and lasts longer, so it's the pick if the power could stay off for days. Inverters are quieter and gentler on electronics, and cost more per kVA at this size.
Single phase or three phase?
Homes run on single phase. A few 8kVA models come in three phase for sheds and workshops with three phase motors, and the phase filter above shows them.
Our picks
The Hyundai HY9000LEK is the value pick for home backup. For long outages, the Hyundai DHY8700SE-LRS diesel uses less fuel on long runs. On farms, the Welling & Crossley WC-P7750H is our pick.
