8kVA Cummins Onan Diesel Generator QD8000

The QD 8000 is a vehicle-mount commercial diesel generator set from the Cummins Onan QD series, producing 8000 watts at 230V and 50Hz with a power factor of 1.0, which is 8kVA. Its engine is a Kubota D1730-M, a three-cylinder, four-cycle, liquid-cooled diesel of 1647 cm³ with a 23:1 compression ratio, running at 1500 r/min. A brush-type, four pole, drip-proof alternator makes the power, with digital voltage regulation.

Key features

• The engine runs at a constant, computer-controlled speed, and frequency regulation is ±0.1% from no load to full load.
• A sound-attenuated housing encloses the cooling system and muffler, which lowers the sound the set makes in service.
• A three-point internal mounting system reduces vibration from the engine and alternator.
• Preheating is handled by an automatic glow plug, so starting needs no manual preheat.
• Self-diagnostics help trace faults, and the set is serviced through a side door, with the switches and coolant fill mounted on top.
• A 15 amp battery charger, an hour meter and a remote-operation connector are standard.
• Shutdowns protect against overvoltage, low oil pressure, overtemperature, overspeed, overload and alternator overtemperature.

Engine oil capacity is 5.6 litres and the cooling system holds 6.2 litres. Output is rated up to 500 ft altitude and 85°F ambient, and falls above those limits.

What it will run

At 230V the 8000 watt output is 35 amps, and the combined running load has to fit inside that. Pumps, power tools, refrigeration and air conditioning all have motors or compressors that typically draw several times their running current at start-up, so leave room for that surge. With a power factor of 1.0, all 8kVA is available as real power. The compliance plate on each appliance gives its power and starting needs. Never connect the set to building wiring except through a changeover switch installed by a licensed electrician. Send us your load list and we will help you size the set.

The QD 8000 suits commercial vehicle installations that need single phase power on board, such as service vehicles, mobile workshops and food vans.
