3kVA Generators

A 3kVA generator is the go-to size for blackout essentials and camping. It runs the fridge, lights, phones and a laptop, and most caravan air conditioners, while staying light enough for one or two people to move.

What will a 3kVA generator run?

• Blackout essentials: the fridge, lights, phones, a laptop and a fan.
• A caravan air conditioner: most run on 2 to 3.5 kVA, and the start up surge is the hard part.
• Light tools: a drill, grinder or battery charger, one at a time.

Each kVA gives about 4 amps on single phase, so a 3kVA generator supplies about 12 amps at full output. Plan on about a quarter less if it will run for long hours.

Inverter or open frame?

An inverter makes clean, stable power that's safe for laptops, phones and modern appliances. It's also quieter and uses less fuel at light loads, which matters overnight or at a campsite. An open frame petrol unit costs less per kVA and handles worksite knocks, but it's louder.
