10kVA Generators

A 10kVA generator covers most of a house, air conditioning included, or keeps a small shop, office or cool room going through an outage.

What will a 10kVA generator run?

• Most of the house, including split system air conditioning.
• The whole house with ducted air: 10kVA and up, usually diesel.
• A shop, office or cool room: 10 to 20kVA diesel.
• Welders, large compressors or several tools at once.

A 10kVA generator supplies about 40 amps on single phase at full output. If it will run for long hours, plan on about a quarter less.

Petrol, diesel or inverter?

Petrol open frames give the most power for the money. Diesel uses less fuel on long runs and lasts longer, which suits standby and daily work. Inverters are the quietest, and gentle on electronics.

Starting itself

Some diesels come as a package with an automatic transfer switch, so the generator starts when the grid drops and hands back when it returns. That suits homes and businesses where nobody may be there to start it.
