Bowen cyclone season
Generators for Bowen
14 cyclones have come within 100 km of Bowen since 1970, and 10 of them passed within 50 km. When Debbie cut the power to Bowen's water treatment plant in 2017, it took two weeks to get generators big enough to the site. These are the generators we'd have ready for the house, the farm and the shed before the next one.

Bowen's cyclone record since 1970
Our Cyclone Ready map counts a cyclone for Bowen when its track passes within 100 km of the 4805 postcode at category 1 strength or more. Since 1970, that's:
- 14 cyclones, about one every 4.0 years
- 5 of them severe, category 3 or stronger
- Most recent: Koji, January 2026
- Strongest inside 100 km: Debbie, March 2017, category 4
- Another 10 passed through as tropical lows or ex-cyclones, which can still bring flooding rain and long outages
Debbie, Dylan and Koji
Debbie crossed the Whitsunday islands as a category 4 before making landfall near Airlie Beach on 28 March 2017, and Bowen also suffered significant damage. Two days later, Bowen had been through another night without power, and the mayor said floodwater and fallen trees had cut the town off in both directions. About 100 people spent a day stuck at a Bruce Highway roadblock at Sandy Gully, 10 km north of town.
Dylan crossed near Bowen as a category 2 early on 31 January 2014, and gales with unusually high tides flooded parts of the coast. More than 12,000 customers across Mackay and the Whitsundays lost power at one stage, though most were back on that night. In January 2026, Koji crossed between Ayr and Bowen as a tropical low, with storm tides of 0.5 to 1.0 m near Bowen. About 23,000 Ergon customers lost power at the peak, mostly in the Mackay and Whitsunday regions.
When the water plant lost power
Debbie cut the power to the Bowen Water Treatment Plant, which supplies about 10,000 people in Bowen and Merinda. Floodwater blocked access to the site for another four days, and Whitsunday Water couldn't get generators big enough there until two weeks after landfall. The mayor said the council would ask the military to help bring in generators to get essential services running.
Within a year, generator plug-in points went in at all of Whitsunday Water's treatment plants and major pump stations. The Bowen plant's upgrade also includes 450 kW of permanent backup generation, with at least three days of fuel on site. That's a sound plan at home too: the right size generator and fuel for a few days.
What size for a Bowen home or farm
The Bowen and Gumlu district grows 13 major crops, from tomatoes and capsicum to beans and corn, more than 250,000 tonnes a year, plus mangoes and cattle. On a farm, the pumps and cool room count as much as the house:
- Fridge, lights, phones and a laptop: a 2 to 3.5 kVA inverter.
- Plus the TV, microwave and fans: 3.5 to 5 kVA.
- The kettle by day, the fridge by night: boil the kettle on the generator, or on a power station rated above its label, and let a 2,000 W power station carry the fridge and fans after dark.
- Most of the house, split system included: 7 to 10 kVA petrol, or 8 to 12 kVA diesel for long runs.
- The whole house with ducted air: 10 kVA and up, usually diesel.
- Cool room, shop or office backup: 10 to 20 kVA diesel.
- Irrigation pumps and other motors started direct on line: about 3.6 kVA for every kW of motor.
Sheds, workshops and pumps with three phase motors need a three phase set. The Generator Finder sizes it in about a minute, or browse diesel generators for the bigger jobs.
After dark in a Bowen blackout
Bowen knows long nights: after Debbie, the town went more than one night without power, cut off by floodwater and fallen trees. That's when a power station earns its keep. It's silent, so the generator can be switched off while the fridge, fans and lights keep going.
Our Welling & Crossley WC-P3200Si and WC-BG2000 bundle was put together for those nights, and the pair costs less than the two bought separately. The 3.8 kVA generator is big enough to boil the kettle itself, so it takes the heavy jobs while the sun's up and tops up the power station as it goes. Once it's switched off, the WC-BG2000 carries the fridge, fans and lights, and a 100 W load runs for around 15 hours. Browse all our portable power stations.
Buy before the wet
Floods can cut Bowen off. The Don River rises quickly after heavy rain, and a serious flood can put homes in the Queens Beach and Bowen delta areas at risk. In February 2026, more than a dozen local roads closed around Bowen, Proserpine and Mackay. Buy before November so it's home, tested and fuelled before the roads close. Start it once a month and store fuel safely.
Delivery to Bowen
Most units up to 10 kVA ship free, and freight for the rest is priced at checkout. Checkout prices are based on delivery to capital cities and major centres. If your Bowen address costs more to reach, we'll call before dispatch with the difference, and you can go ahead or cancel for a full refund. We ship from our store or straight from the supplier warehouse closest to you. Most orders leave within 1 to 5 business days and arrive within 3 to 8 business days of ordering. Sets over about 1 tonne take 1 to 2 weeks to dispatch and need a forklift, crane or tractor forks on site to unload. We'll call first to confirm access, on a farm block or in town.
Run it safely
Don't plug a generator into a power point to run the house. Backfeeding is illegal and can kill the line workers restoring your power. Instead, a licensed electrician fits a changeover switch and inlet, the home version of the generator plug-in points Whitsunday Water fitted after Debbie. See how a changeover switch installation works. Keep the generator outdoors and well clear of doors and windows, because the exhaust can kill.
How we count: a cyclone counts when its track passes within 100 km of the 4805 postcode with winds of at least category 1 strength inside that circle. Tracks come from IBTrACS (NOAA NCEI), July 1970 to April 2026. See every storm near Bowen on our Cyclone Ready map.

Contact usHow many cyclones have hit Bowen?
14 cyclones have come within 100 km of Bowen since 1970, about one every 4.0 years, and 10 of those passed within 50 km. Five were category 3 or stronger, and the most recent was Koji in January 2026.
What size generator do I need for a Bowen home?
A 2 to 3.5 kVA inverter covers the fridge, lights and phones, and 3.5 to 5 kVA adds the TV, microwave and fans. For a split system as well, go 7 to 10 kVA petrol, or 8 to 12 kVA diesel for a long outage.
If I buy a power station, do I still need a generator in Bowen?
For anything beyond light loads over a short outage, yes. On its own, the 2,000 W WC-BG2000 runs a 100 W load for around 15 hours and can top up from solar at up to 1,200 W. A generator like the WC-P3200Si adds the kettle and the heavy jobs, and recharges the power station by day.
What generator suits a farm with pumps and a cool room?
Size for the biggest motor as well as everything else. Allow about 3.6 kVA for every kW of a pump started direct on line. A cool room needs 10 to 20 kVA diesel, and three phase motors need a three phase set.
Do you deliver generators to Bowen?
Yes. Most units up to 10 kVA ship free, and most orders arrive within 3 to 8 business days. Freight on the rest is priced at checkout, and we'll call first if your address costs more to reach.
When's the best time to buy a generator in Bowen?
Before November, while there's time to test it and the roads are open. During Debbie, floodwater and fallen trees cut Bowen off in both directions.
How do I connect a generator to the house safely?
Through a changeover switch and inlet fitted by a licensed electrician, never through a power point. That lets the generator run the circuits you choose without backfeeding the grid.
