550kVA Cummins Diesel Generator GCM500S

The GCM500S is a 550kVA three phase diesel generator set powered by a Cummins QSZ13-G3, a six cylinder, 13 litre, turbocharged and aftercooled engine running at 1500rpm. A Mecc Alte ECO40-3S4A brushless alternator with AVR produces 415V at 50Hz. Ratings are 500kVA / 400kW prime (PRP) and 550kVA / 440kW standby (ESP), and an electronic governor regulates engine speed.

Key features

• A DeepSea 7320 MKII controller and a four pole circuit breaker are fitted, and the breaker switches all three phases and the neutral.
• The 2200 litre bunded fuel tank is good for up to 29 hours at 75% load, and the bund is designed to contain fuel leaks.
• The silenced canopy is rated at 77dB(A) at 7 metres, which gives you a figure to plan around for site noise limits.
• Integrated fork pockets in the hot-dip galvanised skid base allow forklift handling, and the canopy is galvanised and powder coated.
• A battery charger keeps the starting battery charged between runs, and the isolator disconnects it for servicing.
• Harmonic distortion is under 5%, which suits sensitive electronic equipment.

At full load the set burns 101 litres an hour, dropping to 74.2 litres at 75% load and 48.9 litres at 50% load. Oil capacity is 75.3 litres and coolant capacity is 77 litres. The PRP rating covers continuous running at variable load, at an average load factor of 75%, with 10% overload for one hour in any 12. The ESP rating covers emergency supply at an average load factor of 85%, with no overload and a limit of 400 hours a year.

What it will run

At 550kVA standby, the GCM500S is a site supply set. Typical loads are lighting, pumps, compressors, air conditioning plant, workshop machinery and process or control equipment, and the figure to size against is the running load of everything that operates at once. Motors are the catch: a large motor can draw several times its running current as it starts, so stage the starts or allow headroom. Spread single phase loads evenly across the three phases. Connection to site wiring should go through a changeover or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician, with the load schedule assessed by an electrician or engineer.
