8kVA ABLE Diesel Generator PL8D1

The PL8D1 is an 8kVA single phase diesel generator rated 8kVA (8kW) prime and 8.8kVA (8.8kW) standby at 240V, 50Hz and a power factor of 1.0. It is powered by a three cylinder, water-cooled diesel running at 1500 rpm, which drives a four-pole brushless synchronous alternator with AVR. The 12 volt electric start comes with its battery, and protection is an IP67-enclosed RCD plus over current protection.

Key features

• With a power factor of 1.0, the 8kVA prime rating is also 8kW, so the full rating is available as real power.
• A four-pole alternator turning at 1500 rpm produces the 50Hz supply, and the brushless design means there are no brushes to wear.
• The AVR keeps the output voltage steady while appliances cycle on and off.
• The ComAp AMF5 controller has a two-wire remote start input, so an external switch or controller can start the set.
• Three 15A outlets and one 32A outlet, all 240V, are rated IP66 (dust tight and protected against powerful water jets), and hardwire terminals are fitted for a fixed connection.
• The canopy is lockable, which restricts access to the set, and it is sound deadened with a weather-resistant powder coat.

The tank is a 70 litre single skin tank (not bunded). At prime load the set uses about 2.3 litres of diesel an hour, which gives about 30 hours of running on a full tank. Noise is 65 dB(A) at 7 m.

What it will run

At 8kW prime the PL8D1 supplies about 33A at 240V. Typically that suits lighting, fridges and freezers, a pressure pump, power tools and an air conditioner, as long as the combined running load stays within the rating. Motors in pumps, compressors and air conditioners draw several times their running current when they start, so allow headroom for the largest one. Check each appliance's compliance plate for its running and starting power, then add the figures up. The PL8D1 suits homes, farmhouses and farm buildings, small workshops and cafes, as home backup or standby power during a mains outage. With both prime and standby ratings it can also run for regular periods.
