880kVA Cummins or Perkins Diesel Generator GC800S / GP800S

The 880kVA class on this page has two engine options, the Cummins-powered GC800S and the Perkins-powered GP800S, both 1500rpm three phase diesel generator sets. The GC800S is built around a Cummins KTA38G2B, a twelve cylinder, 37.5 litre, turbocharged and aftercooled engine, driving a Stamford S5L1D-H4 brushless alternator with AVR at 415V and 50Hz. It is rated 800kVA / 640kW prime (PRP) and 880kVA / 704kW standby (ESP), and it is housed in a silenced 20 ft container.

Key features

• The GC800S silenced container is rated at 78.8dB(A) at 7 metres, a figure for checking against site noise limits.
• The 1450 litre bunded tank on the GC800S gives 10 hours at 75% load, so plan refuelling for longer outages.
• The GC800S is fitted with a DeepSea 7420 MKII controller and a four pole circuit breaker, which switches the neutral as well as the phases.
• The brushless Stamford alternator on the GC800S has no brushes to wear, and its AVR regulates output voltage as the load changes.

The GC800S uses 172 litres an hour at full load, easing to 135 at 75% load and 94 at 50% load. Its oil capacity is 135 litres and coolant capacity is 194 litres. PRP is continuous running at variable load, at an average load factor of 75% with 10% overload for one hour in 12. ESP is emergency supply at an average load factor of 85%, with no overload and a limit of 400 hours a year.

What it will run

With 800kVA prime and 880kVA standby ratings, the GC800S is a large site set, and sizing comes down to three questions: what runs at once, what starts hardest, and how the load splits across the phases. Typical loads are process plant, pumping, compressed air, cooling, lighting and control systems fed from a main switchboard. Allow for the starting demand of the largest motors, and consider staged starting or soft starters. Connection to site wiring should go through a changeover or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician, and an electrician or engineer should assess the load schedule.
