825kVA Cummins Diesel Generator GC750S

The GC750S is a three phase diesel generator set powered by a Cummins KTA38G2B, a twelve cylinder, 37.5 litre, turbocharged and aftercooled engine running at 1500rpm. A Leroy Somer LSA49.3M8 brushless alternator with AVR supplies 415V at 50Hz. Ratings are 750kVA / 600kW prime and 825kVA / 660kW standby, and the set is housed in a silenced 20 ft container.

Key features

• In its silenced container the set is rated at 78.8dB(A) at 7 metres, a figure to set against site noise limits.
• The 1450 litre bunded tank gives 12 hours at 75% load, and its bund is designed to contain fuel leaks.
• A DeepSea 7420 MKII controller and a four pole circuit breaker are fitted, the breaker switching the neutral as well as the phases.
• An electronic governor on the turbocharged, aftercooled engine regulates speed as the load changes.
• A battery charger and isolator keep the starting battery charged and let it be disconnected for servicing.
• Harmonic distortion is under 5%, which suits sensitive electronic equipment.

Full load fuel use is 160 litres an hour, easing to 120 at 75% load and 83 at 50% load. Oil capacity is 135 litres and coolant capacity is 194 litres. The prime rating is continuous running at variable load, at an average load factor of 75% with 10% overload for one hour in 12. The standby rating is emergency supply at an average load factor of 85%, with no overload and a limit of 400 hours a year.

Sizing a 750kVA prime, 825kVA standby set starts with the site load schedule. It typically feeds a main switchboard supplying plant such as pump stations, compressors, chillers, conveyors and crushers, along with lighting and control systems. Add up the running load of everything that operates together, then check the starting demand of the largest motors and decide whether staged starting or soft starters are needed. Spread single phase loads evenly across the phases. Connection to site wiring should go through a changeover or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician, and an electrician or engineer should assess the load schedule.
