650kVA Perkins Diesel Generator GP600S

The GP600S is the silenced version of the GP600, a three phase diesel generator set powered by a Perkins 2806A-E18TAG1A, a six cylinder, 18.13 litre, turbocharged and aftercooled engine running at 1500rpm. It drives a Leroy Somer LSA47.2L9 brushless alternator with AVR to give 415V at 50Hz. Ratings are 591kVA / 473kW prime and 650kVA / 520kW standby.

Key features

• The DeepSea 7420 MKII controller works with a four pole circuit breaker, which switches the neutral as well as the three phases.
• With the silenced canopy fitted, the noise level is 77.2dB(A) at 7 metres, which gives site planners a figure to work with.
• The 945 litre bunded tank runs the set for 9 hours at 75% load, so build refuelling into the plan for longer outages.
• An electronic governor regulates engine speed as the load changes.
• Harmonic distortion is under 5%, which suits sensitive electronic equipment.

Full load fuel use is 129 litres an hour, falling to 96 litres at 75% load and 63 litres at 50% load. Oil capacity is 62 litres and coolant capacity is 61 litres. The prime rating is continuous running at variable load, at an average load factor of 75%. The standby rating is emergency supply with no overload capability, limited to 400 hours a year.

What it will run

Treat 591kVA as the prime figure and 650kVA as the standby figure when working out what the GP600S can supply. Typical loads are plant motors, pumps, compressors, chillers, lighting and process controls, usually fed through a main switchboard. Take the total running load, add the starting demand of the largest motors, and decide whether staged starting or soft starters are needed. Share single phase loads evenly across the phases. Connection to site wiring should go through a changeover or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician, and an electrician or engineer should assess the load schedule.
