550kVA Balanty Diesel Generator HBD550S (Hyundai)

The HBD550S is a Balanty (Hyundai) diesel generator set rated at 550 kVA / 440 kW standby and 500 kVA / 400 kW prime. It is powered by a Baudouin 6M21G550/5, a six cylinder, 12.54 litre engine with an ECU governor and a 24 V electrical system, and it drives a Hyundai HK544D brushless alternator. A DeepSea 6120 control module and an ABB 800 A four pole main circuit breaker handle control and protection.

Key features

• The alternator has a brushless exciter, 100% copper windings, class H insulation, IP23 protection and voltage regulation of ±0.5%, so supply voltage stays within a narrow band.
• An ATS receptacle and a remote run connector are fitted, so transfer switch and remote start controls can be wired in.
• A key switch and emergency stop are fitted, and a lockable isolator allows the sealed batteries to be disconnected.
• The canopy is powder coated, and the set sits on a steel base frame with fork slots and vibration isolators.
• A dry air filter, a non-return fuel valve, fuel tank drain points and a breather valve are part of the package, along with an operator's manual.
• The set is designed to meet CE, ISO 8528-5:2005, AS 3000-2018 and AS 3010-2017.

Fuel consumption at 50 Hz is 29.2 L/h at 25% load, 51 L/h at 50%, 75.3 L/h at 75%, 109 L/h at full load and 119 L/h at 110%, so running costs can be estimated for your duty cycle. The fuel tank is bunded. Noise is 75.0 dBA at 7 m. The engine takes 38 litres of oil and 62 litres of coolant. Operating limits are an ambient range of minus 25°C to 45°C, humidity below 90% and altitude below 1000 m, with a coolant heater needed below 5°C.

What it will run

A set at this scale is selected from the site's load schedule, not the nameplate. List the running load on every circuit, add the starting demand of the largest motors (a motor can draw several times its running current as it starts), and check how the load divides across the phases. An engineer or electrician should assess the schedule, and confirm the voltage the site needs, before the set is specified.
