450kVA Cummins Diesel Generator C450D5

The C450D5 is a three phase diesel generator set rated 450kVA (360kW) standby, with a prime rating as well, running at 1500 rpm. A Cummins QSG12-G2 drives it: a six-cylinder, cast iron, turbocharged and aftercooled diesel with an electronic governor and 24V DC starting. The Stamford alternator is wye connected, with a voltage range of 190 to 220V and 380 to 440V.

Key features

• Two ratings suit two duties: standby for emergency supply, and prime for a varying load with no annual hour limit.
• The QSG12-G2 is turbocharged and aftercooled, so combustion air is compressed and then cooled before it enters the cylinders, which supports its output.

Plan from the site's load schedule, not from a nameplate: list the running loads, the starting current of the largest motors and any step loads, then have an electrician or engineer assess the schedule before the set is specified. Standby power (ESP) supplies the site for the length of a utility interruption. Prime power (PRP) carries a varying load for unlimited hours, with 10% overload capability. Spread the load evenly across the three phases and check each item's compliance plate. Connection to site wiring must go through a changeover or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
