2500kVA Cummins Diesel Generator GC2500S

The GC2500S is a three phase diesel generator rated at 2250 kVA (1800 kW) Prime Power and 2500 kVA (2000 kW) Standby Power at 415V and 50Hz. It is powered by a Cummins QSK60G8, a 16 cylinder, 60 litre turbocharged and aftercooled diesel running at 1500 rpm, and the alternator is a Stamford 57LID-H4, brushless with an AVR.

Key features

• Prime Power is rated for variable load for unlimited hours a year at an average 75% load factor, with 10% overload for 1 hour in any 12, while Standby Power is rated for emergency supply at an average 85% load factor, with no overload capability and a limit of 400 hours a year.
• The bunded 2000 litre tank gives a 5 hour run time at 75% load, so a long outage needs a refuelling plan.
• The canopy is galvanised and powder-coated to resist corrosion.
• The brushless alternator has Class H insulation and harmonic distortion under 5%, which suits electronic loads as well as motors.
• The four pole circuit breaker switches the neutral as well as the three phases.
• A battery charger and isolator keep the starting battery charged between runs.

Fuel use is 446 L/h at 100% load, 336 L/h at 75% and 232 L/h at 50%. The silenced canopy is rated at 87 dB(A) at 7 m. A DeepSea 7420 MKII controller manages the set, and the engine holds 378 litres of oil and 490 litres of coolant.

What it will run

Standby Power of 2500 kVA works out at about 3480 A per phase at 415V, and Prime Power of 2250 kVA at about 3130 A. Start with the site's load schedule: the running loads, the largest motors, how each is started and the order in which loads come on. A motor can draw several times its running current at start, and a soft starter or drive reduces that surge. Check each machine's compliance plate for its current. An engineer should assess the schedule, and a licensed electrician should design and install the connection to the site's switchgear, including any changeover or transfer arrangement.
