2500kVA Perkins Diesel Generator GP2250S

The GP2250S is a three phase diesel generator rated at 2250 kVA (1800 kW) Prime Power and 2500 kVA (2000 kW) Standby Power at 415V and 50Hz. It is powered by a Perkins 4016-61TRG3, a 16 cylinder, 61.1 litre turbocharged and aftercooled diesel running at 1500 rpm, and the alternator is a Leroy Somer LSA53.2, brushless with an AVR.

Key features

• The high ambient cooling package is there for sites where the air temperature is high.
• Prime Power covers continuous operation at variable load at an average 75% load factor, with 10% overload for 1 hour in any 12, and Standby Power covers emergency supply at an average 85% load factor, with no overload capability and a limit of 400 hours a year, so size to the duty.
• The alternator is brushless with Class H insulation and harmonic distortion under 5%, which suits electronic loads as well as motors.
• An electronic governor responds to load changes to keep engine speed, and so frequency, steady.
• A four pole circuit breaker switches the neutral along with the three phases.
• A battery charger and isolator keep the starting battery charged between runs.

Fuel use is 470 L/h at 100% load, 344 L/h at 75% and 246 L/h at 50%, so a long run needs a planned fuel supply. The engine holds 237 litres of oil and 500 litres of coolant. A DeepSea 7420 MKII controller manages the set.

At Standby Power of 2500 kVA the set supplies about 3480 A per phase at 415V, and about 3130 A at Prime Power of 2250 kVA. That typically suits a site's combined load of motors, pumps, compressors, chillers and building services shared across the three phases. Motor starting is the first check: a motor can draw several times its running current as it starts, and a soft starter or drive reduces that surge. Compliance plates give each machine's current. An engineer should assess the site's load schedule, including starting and step loads, and a licensed electrician should design and install the connection to the switchgear, including any changeover or transfer arrangement.
