18kVA ABLE Diesel Generator PL18X1

The PL18X1 is an 18kVA single phase diesel generator rated 18kVA (18kW) prime (PRP) and 20kVA (20kW) standby (ESP) at 240V, 50Hz and a power factor of 1.0. Power comes from a FAWDE 4DW91-29D, a four cylinder, water-cooled diesel turning at 1500 rpm, which drives a four-pole brushless synchronous alternator with AVR. The set starts electrically at 12 volts, the battery is included, and protection comes from an IP67-enclosed RCD and over current protection.

Key features

• The engine is a naturally aspirated 2.54 litre four-cylinder, so there is no turbocharger in the build.
• The alternator is brushless, with no brushes to wear, and its AVR holds voltage within ±0.5% as the load changes.
• The ComAp AMF controller accepts a two-wire remote start, so a switch or external controller can start the set.
• The canopy is sound deadened and finished in a weather-resistant powder coat, with stainless steel fittings and a lock.
• Three 15A outlets are rated IP66 (dust tight and protected against powerful water jets), and hardwire terminals are fitted for a fixed connection.
• Mine site ready bunding is specified for sites that need fuel spills contained.
• The set is specified for ambient temperatures from -25°C to 45°C (a coolant heater is needed below 5°C), humidity under 80% and altitude under 1000 m.

The tank holds 125 litres and noise is 65 dB(A) at 7 m. The design standards are CE, ISO 8528-5:2005, AS 3000-2018 and AS 3010-2017.

What it will run

At 240V the PL18X1 has a rated current of about 75A. Typically that suits a workshop with several machines, a farm with pumps and outbuildings, a single phase commercial premises, or the essential circuits of a home. Starting current is the catch: a pump, compressor or air conditioner can draw several times its running current as it starts, so size around the largest motor. Check each appliance's compliance plate for its running and starting power, then add the figures up. Prime (PRP) allows unlimited hours on a variable load, with an average load factor below 70% per 24 hours and 10% overload for 1 hour in every 12. Standby (ESP) is limited to 500 hours a year, with an average load factor below 80% per 24 hours and no overload. Home backup needs an inlet and changeover switch fitted by a licensed electrician. The PL18X1 suits farms, workshops, single phase commercial premises, small industrial sites and home backup. It can cover a mains outage as standby power, or run as prime power on a variable load.
