110kVA Cummins Diesel Generator LG100C

The Cummins LG100C is a 50Hz three phase diesel generator set rated at 110kVA (88kW) standby and 100kVA (80kW) prime at 415V. A Cummins 6BT5.9G2, a turbocharged six cylinder 5.9 litre diesel, runs at 1500 rpm under a mechanical governor and drives a Leroy Somer TAL-A44-E brushless alternator with AVR. The set has electric start and a DeepSea controller.

Key features

• The silenced canopy is rated at 73 dB(A) measured at 7 m, a figure you can check against a site's noise limits before installation.
• The 450 litre fuel tank is bunded, which gives containment if it leaks, and it is rated for 26 hours of running at 75% load.
• The alternator keeps harmonic distortion under 5%, which suits electronic loads, and has Class H insulation.
• A four pole circuit breaker and the DeepSea controller are fitted, so control and main protection are built into the set.
• Two 15 A 240V outlets and one 32 A 415V outlet let portable tools and equipment run directly from the set.
• The heavy duty skid base has fork pockets for forklift handling, the canopy is galvanised and powder-coated, and a battery charger and isolator are fitted.

At full load the engine uses 22 litres an hour, falling to 17 litres at 75% load and 11 litres at 50% load. Lube oil capacity is 16 litres and coolant capacity is 19.7 litres. The standby rating applies to emergency supply at an average load factor of 85%, limited to 400 hours a year, with no overload capability. The prime rating applies to variable-load running with no annual hour limit at an average load factor of 75%, with 10% overload for 1 hour in every 12.

What it will run

At 110kVA standby, the LG100C typically carries the main circuits of a mid-sized commercial or industrial site: lighting, pumps, refrigeration, compressors, workshop machinery and office equipment. Add up the running load first, then allow for starting loads. Large motors can draw several times their running current as they start, and the biggest motor on site often decides the size of set you need. On a three phase supply, balance the load across the phases and check the compliance plate on each machine. An engineer or electrician should review the site load schedule, and any link to the switchboard must go through a changeover or transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
