5kVA Generators
Every 5kVA generator we sell, from inverters for home backup to diesel units for long runs.
5kVA Generators
A 5kVA generator runs the essentials with room to spare: the fridge and freezer, lights, TV, microwave and fans at home, or a set of power tools on the job.
What will a 5kVA generator run?
- Home backup: the fridge, freezer, lights, TV, microwave and fans.
- Worksite: power tools, chargers and a small compressor.
- Welding: a modern inverter welder drawing about 15 input amps.
A 5kVA generator supplies about 20 amps on single phase at full output. To keep a split system air conditioner going as well, look at 7kVA and up.
Inverter, petrol or diesel?
Inverters are quieter and use less fuel at light loads, so they suit overnight running. Petrol open frames give the most power for the money. Diesel uses less fuel on long runs and lasts longer, which suits regular use and standby.
Our picks
For home backup we'd look either side of 5kVA: the Hyundai HY3500iE, a 4.3kVA inverter with electric start, for the essentials, or the Hyundai HY5000iSE, a 6.8kVA inverter, for more headroom. In this size range, the MaxWatt MX4500IS is a 5.4kVA inverter with electric and remote start.
