How to Power a Coffee Cart at Weddings, Markets and Events

Venues love a coffee cart. What they care about is where the generator goes, how loud it is and whether your leads are safe. Get those right and you'll be rebooked.

What powers a cart

A one-group machine, a grinder and a milk fridge. With a 10A machine, the generator below runs all three with room to spare.

Got a 15A machine? That takes the cart to about 4,260W, over our 80 per cent line on the HY5000iSE, so step up to the Hyundai HY10000iSE.

Stepping up to a two-group van? The HY10000iSE runs that too. See how to start a coffee van business.

For the detail-minded

A one-group machine (10A, up to about 2,300W), a grinder and a milk fridge come to about 3,110W. That's 62 per cent of the HY5000iSE's 5,000W rating, under the 80 per cent Queensland's Electrical Safety Office recommends for continuous running. A 15A machine (up to about 3,450W) makes it about 4,260W: 85 per cent of the HY5000iSE, but 47 per cent of the HY10000iSE's 9,000W.

How an event day runs

1
Park the generator first
Outside, well away from guests, on dry ground with a metre of clear space around it and the exhaust pointing away from people, doors and windows.
2
Run your lead in
One lead from the generator to your cart's inlet (fitted by a licensed electrician), rated for the outlet it plugs into, tested and tagged.
3
Pour
The generator carries the cart.
4
Pack down
Machine off, then generator off once it's cooled.

Questions venues ask

Will we hear it?
A little: it's an engine. The HY5000iSE is rated at 66 dB at 7 metres at a quarter load, and it's louder with the whole cart running, so park it well away from guests, ideally behind a wall or your vehicle. With the optional power station below, the milk fridge, grinder and lights run with the engine off while you set up.
Is it safe?
Its exhaust carries carbon monoxide, so it never runs indoors or anywhere enclosed. Refuel only when it's off and cool, and have a licensed electrician fit RCD (safety switch) protection that suits the generator.
Are your leads tested?
Use leads rated for the outlet they plug into, and get leads and appliances tested and tagged.
Do you have insurance?
Many events ask to see public liability insurance, so keep a copy handy.

The fine print on the battery

We base the battery time on the milk fridge's energy rating, about 3kWh a day or 126W on average, rather than its plate, because it cycles on and off. After allowing 80 per cent of the HYPS1500's 1,152Wh for conversion losses (about 920Wh), that's roughly 7 hours.

The power station charges at up to 550W. With the cart running that's about 3,660W, 73 per cent of the HY5000iSE, so it can recharge while you pour, as long as each has its own outlet: the cart on the generator's 32A, the power station on the 15A. If your cart runs from the 15A outlet, charge the power station before or after the event, not from a socket in the cart.
